High School Survival: From the Mind of Many Teens

Today in English II we discussed being a teenager and surviving high school. We were all asked to write out some unwritten rules for survival.
Here are some that I see listed:

  • get even
  • be prepared for anything
  • be aware of your surroundings at all times
  • its okay to be wrong
  • beware of bullying
  • choose your friends wisely
  • stay one step ahead of everybody
  • keep your friends close and your enemies closer
  • listen to everyone but believe no one
  • keep your phone on vibrate
  • stay in your own group
  • have friends
  • don't change for other people
  • just go with it
  • don't get caught
  • don't be fake
While some of these may seem a bit ridiculous at first, we high schoolers actually have a bit of unknown knowledge. We survive this mayhem they call "the best four years of your life" every single day. We know our way around and how to behave and walk in the hall, how to text in class without even glancing at our phones, and knowing what's socially right or wrong. I have learned a lot from my current years here and will continue to observe these things that make me who I am.

Winter

"The breath of a winter day is icy to the touch and threatens your goosebumps to rise. I have wondered on multiple occasions as to why I am so very fond of winter. Whether it's the feeling of everything dying only to be born again, or the way the wind whispers through the trees, nudging stubborn red leaves to fall. Puddles freeze over, and the earth is much darker than usually. It seems as though there is a permanent overcast. With some good luck, we might see the fresh face of an early morning snow. Oh, how I adore snow. The way each flake is individually unique. The way they come together to form the white fluff that we all have experienced with joy and wonder. Winter is absolutely breathtaking. Going for a late night run, the chilly air through your hair, as you breathe icy hot down into your lungs. Even the sickness in winter is fascinating. We get colds, and flues, and we cough and wheeze, pulling out as many tissues as our bag will hold, trying our best not to sneeze in uncomfortable situations, and yet we still manage to pick ourselves up from the safety and comfort of our couch, and bundle ourselves up in our winter coats, and trudge out into the wild winter wonderland to adore its beauty. Winter is an especially good time of year."

Yes, I wrote that. From the poet's side of my soul.
I think it's pretty good in describing winter.

Precautions of Winter:
  • It's cold, so watch the weather, be prepared, and bundle up!
  • Make sure you keep your ears covered, msot ear infections occur from winter winds.
  • Gloves are a good way to keep your hands warm, and they come in all different colors!
  • Scarves are a personal favorite of mine and they can cover your head, neck, and chest.
  • Fluffy Boots - these are my personal favorite and one of the best things about winter. Some of the cutest boots are in season and come in all different colors. So go ahead, find a pair that you like. They're definitely good at keeping you warm!
Hope this helps you on your winter endeavors.

Sandals: The New Trend?

Okay so I've seen them everywhere. Sandals. Gladiator sandals, strap on, flip flop knock offs, Jesus slippers, and all other sorts of arrangements. But are these really the newest thing?

We all can agree that they're super cute. They come in all different colors, shapes, designs, and sizes. And they're supremely comfortable. The bad news? They're not all they're cracked up to be.

Although they are comfortable, it's much easier to walk out of them if you don't buy the right size or if your strap breaks. They're definitely not good for running or heavy activities. They can be easily broken, they can fit you incorrectly and cause foot discomfort, and quite frankly, they get old pretty quickly.

Girls compliment each other about how cute they are,, but then the response from those girls usually sound something like this, "Thanks, girl! I love them! Except sometimes they hrut my feet. And the zipper on the back doesn't stay. And the strap comes loose. And... etc." The lsit goes on and on.

It's that age old question with these fashion flippers,
Style?
or substance?

Snacking: We All Do It

I like to eat.
I like to go on a "seafood" diet. I see food. And I eat it.

Snacking is good, and fun to do, but it's definitely not a way to lose weight.

So here are some good snacking tips for when you're trying to cut back.
  • Don't just quit cold turkey, it doesn't work. Take it slow.
  • Almonds are a great way to snack without gaining weight.
  • Admit it: Fruits are actually pretty great.
  • If you get a craving, only satisfy what you crave for. Don't go overboard and buy 45678324969 pounds of snack foods.
  • Don't snack all day long. Set snack times for yourself and folow them.
Hope this helps!

Fighting With Your Significant Other

Here's the thing about guys and gals. Whenever we get into fights with our significant other, we automatically assume that we're right and therefore we want to win the argument more than anything.
Here's the problem, even if we're wrong, we continue to fight.

Guys: If your girl or guy starts crying, you know you've gone too far. Crying is the BODY'S reaction to feeling physical sadness, instead oe meotional sadness. It's okay to admit you were wrong (sometimes even if you weren't) and just hold her and tell her it'll be okay.

Girls: If your guy or girl starts throwing a temper tandrum, do your best to calm them down, no one wins in a fight that involves yelling and throwing random objects at each other.

Caution: Do NOT fight via text. It's the easiest way to end something without realizing what's happening. Call each other and talk it out, so you know exactly how the other person feels and exactly how you can try and fix the problem. It's hard to tell what someone's tone is when a text message is just letters and punctuation.

Recently, my significant other and I got into a pointless argument that ended up being a huge 3 hour fight. We had been fighting via text and things were getting pretty bad. Then, later on, I sent him a text saying "It's 11:11 and I wish you would call me." When he called me, I said hello, thinking he was going to be pissed, as his texts had appeared to be angry. I was very wrong. He had been crying hopelessly for the past 3 hours of our fight, not knowing what to say to make it better. When we talked on the phone, we both calmed down more and it became easier to get both of our points across without being insane about it.
I almost ended what has been the most wonderful relationship I've ever had, simply because texting is a useless tool for expressing your true feelings.

Be careful, and try to work it out over the phone.

Procrastination

Okay well I personally have problems with this one. I have a portfolio due on the 31st of October. The last day that my teacher will take it is November 18th. I doubt I'll have it in until at least November 10th. I am a perfect example of Procrastination.

Basically, when you procrastinate (pro-krass-tuh-nate), you put off doing your work.
This is a big no no. Even though it seems like a good idea at the time, it will eventually come back to haunt you. Come on, really? No, that can't be true.
Yes. It can.
And the real problem with this is the fact that we all have done it, or will do it, at some point in time.

When you procrastinate, you put yourself at risk of forgetting to do the work completely, or forgetting how to do a certain thing. Practice makes perfect. Don't procrastinate, it's not worth it.
